Single
Speed and Fixed Gear Hubs
All Surly hubs have
high quality sealed cartridge bearings, which are easily replaceable,
should they ever need it, which is unlikely. The axles are threaded
and can be replaced by hollow axles should you prefer to use
a quick release. Surly fixed hubs do not ship with a lock ring.
We sell those separately.
White Industries makes
a unique fixed - free hub called the ENO. The axle end is offset,
allowing you to adjust the chain tension by rotating the axle.
You don't need a hortizontal dropout to adjust chain tension!
This hub works in vertical dropouts.
I stock the full range of Phil Wood
hubs as well. Descriptions, pricing and pictures soon.
Track frames have
traditionally had either 110mm or 120mm between the rear dropouts.
Currently, 120mm is the norm for track frames. Track bikes have
fixed gears. In other words, the rear cog doesn't freewheel;
you can't coast on a track bike. The single cog threads onto
the hub, and then a lock ring is tightened against the cog
to prevent the cog from loosening while you ride. The lock ring
is on a slightly smaller threading, just to the outside of the
threading on the hub for the cog. Also, the lock ring is on a
left hand thread, whereas the cog is on a right hand thread.
So if the cog should loosen backwards (to the left or counterclockwise),
the lock ring will be forced in the same direction. And the result
is that the lock ring gets tighter against the cog, preventing
it from loosening further.
You can see in the
pictures of rear hubs below that some have a single size thread
on the end, and others have sort of a step in the threading.
The larger inside threading is for the fixed gear cog, and the
smaller outside threading is for the lock ring. Hubs without
the second smaller thread are designed to take single speed freewheels,
not fixed cogs. The freewheels thread onto the hub. You only
have one gear ratio, but you can coast.
Some of the hubs I
sell have one side designed to take a fixed cog, and the other
to take a single speed freewheel. These are commonly called fixed/free
hubs. Hubs with a single size thread on each end are free/free
hubs. Those with stepped threads on each end are fixed/fixed
hubs. All are generically called flipflop hubs.
Some older
style track hubs have a thread for a fixed cog on only one
side. But most have threading on both sides. Even when the type
of cog is the same on both sides, you can have a different size
cog on each side. For instance, you might want a 16 tooth fixed
cog on one side and a 17 tooth cog on the other. Just flip the
wheel around to change your gearing.
|
Phil Wood
I have a huge inventory of Phil Wood track hubs. I have fixed on one side, fixed on both sides (Fixed/Fixed), fixed on one side, freewheel on the other side (Fixed/Free), and in 135mm, we have the Kiss-Off with freewheel threading on both sides. The Kiss-Off is used for single speed mountain biking. We keep 32 and 36 hole fronts and rears in stock. Rears are available in 120mm, 126mm, 130mm and 135mm. In high flange track, we stock them all! We don't stock the low flange track hubs. But we can order them.
While I don't keep QR versions in stock, any Phil Wood track hub can be ordered with a hollow axle for use with a quick release skewer or Pitlock locking skewer. All Phil Wood hubs that take a fixed cog come complete with a lock ring for the cog, but not with a cog. The Fixed/Fixed comes with two lock rings, of course. If you special order the hubs with QR axles, they will not come with skewers. We have Salsa skewers as well as Pitlock locking skewers. I'll have prices here soon but for now just call or email for a current price on either a hub or a wheel. See below for Phil Wood fixed cogs in both 1/8" and 3/32" sizes. We also stock a wide range of EAI cogs.
FSA High Flange Track (Fixed/Fixed)
Rear hubs, symmetrical flanges for zero dish, double sided for fixed cogs. This means the hub will take two fixed cogs, one on each side. So you can have a 16 tooth cog on one side and a 17 tooth on the other. To change gears, just flip the wheel over. These are made in 32 hole and 36 hole versions. You don't need many spokes, since the wheels have no dish at all. So even a 32 spoke wheel with a light weight rim will hold a heavy rider without spoke failure. Any Phil Wood hub taking a fixed cog will include the lock ring. Since the Fixed/Fixed take two cogs, they all come with two lock rings. No cogs are included with the hub.

FSA High Flange Track (Fixed/Free)
Rear hubs, symmetrical for zero dish, taking a fixed cog on one side and a single speed freewheel on the other. So you can switch from fixed gear riding to a freewheel just by flipping the wheel over. The hub includes a lock ring for the fixed cog side. No fixed cog or freewheel is included with the hub.

Add $

FSA High Flange Track (Fixed One Side)
Rear hubs, with one side accepting a fixed cog. Lock ring included. No cog included. These hubs aren't symmetrical, so the right side spokes are shorter and
require higher tension than the left side spokes. While there is dish, it's minimal, and you can reduce it further by using an offset rim like the Velocity Aerohead O/C or the Synergy O/C. We have the Synergy O/C in 700c, 650b and 26"-559 sizes. We have the Aerohead O/C in both 700c and 650c sizes.

Kiss-Off
For a single speed mountain bike with 135mm axle, Phil Wood makes the Kiss-Off hub. I stock rears with freewheel threading on both sides so you can have two different size freewheels and change your gearing just by flipping the wheel around. And I stock it with freewheel on one side and fixed on the other. The fixed side has the extra left hand thread and comes with the lock ring to keep the cog from unthreading under back pressure, hence the higher price. Of course, no cogs are included as they are sold separately and are available in many different sizes.

Phil Wood Kiss-Off, Free/Free, 32 hole or 36 hole: $
I don't keep front Kiss-Off hubs in stock at this time. But they are available quickly from Phil Wood, meaning that it only adds a day or two to get a front wheel built with a Kiss-Off hub.
Front Track, High Flange & Low Flange
Phil front track hubs are pretty simple, exquisitely well made, with bolt-on axles.

White Industries ENO
I stock the ENO in both 130mm and 135mm axles, and in either 32
or 36 hole drilling. By special order, it's available in 28 hole
drilling, and in a 126mm axle. The 7.5mm offset axle gives you
15mm of adjustment to chain tension. The hub accepts a fixed cog on one end, and a single speed freewheel on the other. No lockring is included. We stock several brands of compatible lockrings.

Here's a wheel with a White Industries Eno hub, with a White Industries freewheel on one side and an EAI fixed cog on the other side. I build these wheels with many types of rims. Call for wheel pricing.
White Industries Racer X
Matching front hubs are also in stock, so people
won't think you're odd. The Racer X has the same top quality sealed
bearings as the ENO, and the same styling. Unlike the ENO, which
has a bolt-on axle, the Racer X takes a quick release. The Racer
X is made in 28, 32, 36 and 40 hole drillings. I stock it in 32
hole, and the others can be had quickly by special order. It rarely
takes more than a week to get them in.

Track Cogs 1/8" Width
Euro-Asia cogs are precisely machined
from hard steel. They run with extremely low drag, last indefinitely,
and won't break the bank account. Whenever possible, I recommend
using 1/8" cogs, chainrings and chain. The increase in
weight is negligible. But the increase in durability is considerable,
since the wider chains have bushings, making them laterally
stiffer and more resistant to wear.

EAI Superstar Stainless Steel Cogs |
These were EAI's best track cogs. (Don't worry, they're still really good.) The sides of the teeth are beveled with a curve so there's no edge for the chain to catch on, making the whole drive train very smooth. All of the edges are smoothed to eliminate noise and friction.
Here the cog is shown on a hub but without the lockring. Don't ride without a lockring! But notice how nicely finished the teeth are. And the sides and edges of the teeth are smoothed down for very quiet chain engagement. The back side of the cog, which you can't see here, is polished just as beautifully as the front side.
Here is what Euro-Asia has to say about their beautiful new cogs.
"The EAI Superstar cog's foundation comes from professional level track racing. Euro-Asia Imports has been following Japanese Keirin, UCI world cup, World championship and Olympic level track racing for many years. The design of these cogs is based on close cooperation with the highest level athletes in the small cult world of professional track racing.
The top racers each have their own custom tuned cogs, these treasured cogs are very rare, expensive and normally saved for important races. Tuned cogs are made in very small quantity by a few specialists. The tuned cog begins with an existing high end cog that is reshaped to a desired tooth profile, then polished, electrolysis nickle plated, hard chrome plated or a combination thereof. Tuned cogs are not only beautiful to look at but run very smoothly.
The tuned cog's drawback is that it is only a modification of an existing cog. Because EAI makes their cogs from the ground up they are able to create their own foundation, selecting any material, shape, angle, radius, thread they desire. The Superstar cog has undergone four prototype series of design changes in an effort to create the most accurate, smoothest running cog ever produced. Prototype testing of the Superstar was performed by current UCI world cup Keirin champion along with Olympic champion and three time world champion. Earlier this year the final prototypes were used in the Japanese International Keirin, receiving four first place finishes.
Feedback from our sponsored racers was fantastic, the final tooth shape was a complete success. The Superstar cog out performed the finest of the tuned cogs in every category, chain flow, lubricity, smoothness, accuracy, durability etc. Under load, at full speed, it's as though the cog disappears, the noise you hear is from others around you. There has never been a track cog produced to this level of perfection, the Superstar is truly the finest cog in the world, only a handful of the finest tuned cogs run a distant second place in comparison."
My own close inspection of these cogs leads me to believe that Euro-Asia is not exagerating their claims about these cogs. If used with a high quality chain such as the Izumi V (see below) and a high quality chainring, the drive train will be silent, efficient and durable.
Each cog comes in its own fabric pouch.
As of Feb 1, 2007, we have 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18 teeth in stock. These are only being made in 1/8", so you won't be able to use these with road chains, which are 3/32" wide. No other sizes of the Superstar will be offered. And there will be no 3/32" sizes offered. $
70.00
EAI now have something even better, the "Gold Medal" cogs. The Gold Medal cogs start out as Superstar cogs, but then get a bit more polishing, and most importantly, a titanium nitride coating which doubles the durability of the cog. Available in 13 through 18 teeth, 1/8" only. $

Wheels
I build wheels with any of the hubs listed above.
I normally build with Wheelsmith DB14 spokes, which are 14 gauge
at each end, and 16 gauge in the middle. The DB14 spokes cost $
each in stainless steel, and $
1.00
each for black plated stainless
steel. XL-14 spokes are 14g at each end and 17g in the middle, $
.
I will build wheels with aluminum nipples, but since the nipples can fail after just a few years of use, I do not extend my lifetime guarantee to wheels built with aluminum nipples, and of course they cost more. The Wheelsmith brass nipples I use
are trouble free. I charge $
0.00
labor to build each wheel, provided
you are purchasing the rim, spokes, and hub from me. If you provide
the hub or new rim, the labor charge is $
40.00 . I won't build wheels
with used rims, used spokes or spokes/rims provided by the customer.
If you have hubs in good condition that you would like to have built up, please send them in.
Here are a few sample wheelsets. These are not the only wheels I can build, just a tiny representative sample to give you an idea of prices and some options. I have many rims from Velocity, Mavic and Sun available. While I have wheelsets listed here, I can also build individual front or rear wheels with Phil Wood, White Industries, Surly, Miche and Suzue hubs. Shimano track hubs are only sold in pairs, unfortunately. Call or email for prices with the rim of your choice.
Some of the most popular rims for track racing and general fixed gear riding are the Velocity Deep V rims in their huge range of colors. In 700c I stock all the Deep V rim colors in 32 hole and 36 hole, and I stock them in both machined sidewall for bikes with rim brakes, as well as the non-machined sidewalls for bikes with disc brakes, or no brakes. Colors include Bright Gold, Bright Silver, Electric Red, Eggplant Purple, Lemon Yellow, Electric Blue, Tangerine Orange, Chocolate Brown, Celeste Green, Lime Green, White, Ti Grey and Black.

The email link above uses some fancy javascript voodoo to hide the actual address
from spambots. Your browser needs to be set to run javascript in order for you
to use any of the email links on my website. If you can't see the links, you
can call us. You can also type the address into your email software.
First, type the alias, "penny". Then type the "@" sign. It's
above the number 2 on your keyboard. Then type the domain, "peterwhitecycles.com".
Don't put in the quotes! That should do it.
It's best to call before 4PM Eastern time since after that we're
either running around like headless chickens or at home ready to jump into
the pot.
