This page is a work in progress. I have listed most of the Rohloff hubs, and I have listed most of the parts. But there is more to come. Peter White Cycles LLC is an official service center for Rohloff, and a Rohloff distributor. Both the general public and bicycle shops in the USA and Canada can order Rohloff hubs and parts from us.
We also build wheels with Rohloff hubs. I've been building wheels since 1969 and I think I've finally gotten the hang of it. So, if you need more than just the hub, we can help.
By the way, Peter White Cycles and Propel (www.propelbikes.com) are the only authorized service centers for Rohloff in North America.
The Rohloff Speedhub has 14 distinct gear ratios, all about 13% to 14% between gears. This is a terrific solution to the wear and tear of derailleur systems. The hub is far more reliable than any derailleur system. The internal gears are protected by oil so wear is kept to a minimum. All you need to do is replace the oil once a year. Indexing of the gears is all done internally, so there's no need for frequent adjustments to the system.
Most versions of the Rohloff hub are available for 32 or 36 spokes. That may not seem enough for many applications, like loaded touring or tandems, but in fact, it's plenty! The wide spacing and perfectly symmetrical placement of the spoke flanges means that there's no difference in spoke tension between the left and right side spokes, as there is in most rear bicycle wheels. So with a stiff enough rim, 32 spokes is plenty. 36 is mostly for people who tend to worry. (Not that there's anything wrong with that!)
There is a bewildering array of options for the Rohloff. The reason for all of these choices is the different types of frames available. Some bikes use disc brakes. Some bikes have horizontal dropouts, some vertical dropouts.
Rohloff no longer makes hubs specifically for bikes with rim brakes. But of course Rohloff hubs made for disc brakes work perfectly well with rim brakes. We do have a few hubs without disc mounts still in stock, and these can be converted for disc brakes if needed.
Being internally geared, the Rohloff hub axle wants to rotate in the dropouts under pedaling loads in all but one gear ratio, 11th. But in order for the gears to work, the axle must be kept stationary, so it can't rotate, or spin in the dropout. So, either the Rohloff axle and dropout have to be made for each other, like some custom dropouts, or you need a device called a torque arm that extends forward from the hub, and clamps to the left chainstay of the frame, keeping the axle stable. Most current production bikes have disc brakes, so now, by using a special disc brake caliper mount, the Rohloff hub can be stabilized by a special disc caliper mount.
Next, you have three colors available, silver anodized, red anodized, and black anodized. So most of the mechanical options get multiplied by three to cover the color options. ;-)

Service and Repairs. Most servicing consists of replacing the shifter cables and the yearly oil change. But this section covers just about everything except a complete rebuild of the planetary gear system.
Rohloff now ships hubs with 12.5ml of all season oil. So when you receive your wheel, you'll need to follow the instructions on filling the oil.
Many people want to use the Rohloff hub with Gates Carbon drive trains. We are a Gates distributor and can provide you with a Rohloff hub already fitted with a Gates cog. We can also retrofit your Rohloff hub to work with Gates, or sell you the tools and Gates components you need.

| Rohloff Spokes |

Rohloff spokes are made by Sapim to Rohloff's specifications. We stock the full range of Rohloff spokes in regular stainless finish, as well as black plated spokes in the longer lengths. All spokes are double butted, 2mm at the ends and 1.8mm in the center. They are sold in packs of 37 spokes with 37 Sapim Polyax Secure Lock brass nipples. Silver finish spokes come with nickel plated brass nipples. Black spokes come with black plated brass nipples. 300mm, 270mm and 240mm are available without threading. These are called "blanks". If you like, we can cut and thread the spokes for you to your desired length. Bike shops may wish to cut and thread the spokes themselves if they have suitable tooling.300mm length can be cut as short as 272mm. 270mm length can be cut as short as 240mm. 240mm length can be cut as short as 210mm. We do not charge any fee for cutting and threading Rohloff spokes with our Phil Wood Spoke Machine. Shorter lengths (128mm, 146mm through 154mm and 198mm) come to us from Rohloff already cut and threaded. Also, note that these shorter lengths are only offered in silver finish. |

Rohloff now requires the use of their spokes, due to changes in the elbow dimensions of most spokes on the market. Use of other spokes to build a wheel with a Rohloff hub can result in failure of the hub flange and will void the hub's warrantee.

We stock the cleaning oil and all season oil in several sizes for the home mechanic and bike shops. After draining the old oil, flush the hub with the cleaning oil. Then drain the cleaning oil overnight and add 12.5ml of All Season Oil. The drain screw must be replaced with a new drain screw with every oil change, otherwise the oil can leak from the drain hole. The new drain screw has a special thread compound to help seal and prevent loosening.
Whenever you buy Rohloff oil, you'll get cleaning oil, all season oil, and a new drain screw. We also sell the drain screws individually, should you want a spare.
In 2023, Rohloff changed the recommended amount of all season oil that should be used in the hub from 25ml to 12.5ml. This is because over time and several oiling cycles, too much oil can accumulate in the hub, leading to leakage of oil from the left side of the hub.
Unlike some other internally geared hubs, the Rohloff does not depend on a bath of oil at the bottom of the hub shell. It is sufficient for the internal components to have a thin film of oil for the hub to run reliably. When changing the oil, we recommend to allow the cleaning oil to drain out over night.
The photos below are the older versions showing the all season oil coming in 25ml bottles. Current oil comes in 12.5ml bottles of all season oil with 25ml of cleaning oil. The larger shop sizes are now also shipped with 1/2 the all season oil as the cleaning oil. I'll update the photos in due course. Linda is laughing as I type this.

| The Speedbone bolts to the outside of the IS mounts on your frame along with your existing disc caliper mount (which mounts to the inside of the IS mounts) and provides a pickup point for the OEM2 axle plate. This is also ideal for use on frames with IS disc mounts, when you don't use disc brakes, such as many tadpole trikes which only have front brakes. So you can use the OEM2 axle plate and not have to use a torque arm to stabilize the axle.

The PM Bone provides a pickup point for the PM axle plate. For Postmount frames. The PM Bone will sit between the brake mount and brake caliper and so acts simultaneously as an adapter. The "next size up" brake rotor is therefore always required.
Frames designed for 160mm brakes will need to use a 180mm Rohloff rotor with the PM Bone.
Frames designed for 180mm brakes will need to use a 203mm Rohloff rotor wirh the PM Bone.
The PM Bone will not work if the frame is designed for a directly mounted 140mm or 203mm brake.
There are few standardized dimensions on postmount brake dropouts, so customers should check the dropout has the necessary 40mm diameter of flat dropout material around the axle hole. All too often, the material used to support the brake mount, starts too near the axle hole and this creates collision issues with the axleplate, hindering it resting flat against the inside face of the dropout.
